AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2970WX

Then we have the 24-core Threadripper 2970WX which is a 3D rendering beast, just like the 2990WX. Unfortunately right now Windows won’t allow you to get the most out of this processor, so it’s not a CPU we recommend unless you’re using Linux or you are certain it can blast its way through whatever workload you want to throw at it.

Unfortunately, the Ryzen Threadripper 2970WX arrives just as AMD's high-end desktop processor supremacy is coming to a close. Had it arrived in August alongside the Threadripper 2990WX and 2950X, we would have a better outlook for it – at least as good...

The ThreadRipper 2920X is a great successor to the 1920X, and in some cases, it matches the 1950X. The 2970WX is a decent addition to AMD's high-end workstation CPU line up and gives users other options when it comes to AMD's quad-die ThreadRipper CPUs.

The 2970WX slots in neatly below the 2990WX and, at £1,200, offers multi-core goodness that is outside the capabilities of the £2,000 Core i9-7980XE. Though not as strong in light-load instances and generally slower when gaming at 1080p, it's a fine choice for those that can't stretch to the range-topping processor yet need massive CPU performance.

Bringing the cost of very high core count processors down to a more attainable level, the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2970WX wins a PC Perspective Gold Award. While some applications still won't be able to take advantage of the high core count, AMD is offering 24 CPU cores for less $700 than Intel's 18-core count option.

The Threadripper 2970WX follows the same path the 2990WX trod, that having so many cores and threads available mean that if you're rendering or relying almost wholly upon hugely calculation heavy tasks in your daily use then it's absolutely the one to go for. But those high core counts come at a usability cost when using everything else. Windows, and certainly a lot of applications, just aren't designed to utilise 24 cores and 48 threads, and so the slightly lower clock speed plays a bigger role when your app is only using four (for example) and the rest is idle.

Ryzen Threadripper 2970WX comes equipped with 24 cores and 48 threads. But there are caveats to consider. For instance, some applications fail to exploit the CPU's full complement of execution resources. As a result, the 2970X is only ideal for certain...

Pinnacle Ridge (ZEN+) brought Threadripper what they needed, better yields on 12nm offered them the ability to lower voltage a bit, thus increasing the clock frequency. The conundrum of it all is simple, I did not expect a 32- and 24-core part but they...

We recently updated our Linux testing suite a wee bit, making minor changes, but at the expense of dropping all single-threaded benchmarks – by accident. We hadn't thought much about every single set of results being hugely optimized for core counts,...

If you're building a workstation and are tired of waiting for that rendering progress bar to get a move on, this is the CPU for you. For extreme loads and massive projects like making movies, the 32-core is better suited. However, for mid-size projects...
