AMD Ryzen 9 7900X

The Ryzen 9 7900X is an impressive and capable CPU, but in a way it's also a somewhat unfortunate product, because while it's quite good at everything, in terms of value it's not great, even for a specific workload.

Performance Benchmarks

All benchmark data reflects aggregated results from dozens of tests conducted in TechSpot’s labs and compiled from our full library of CPU reviews. Single-core productivity scores are based primarily on Cinebench and Adobe Photoshop workloads. Multi-core results draw from Cinebench, Blender, Corona Benchmark, 7-Zip, Adobe Premiere Pro, and shader compilation tests. CPU gaming benchmarks are all 1080p runs (explainer) as published on TechSpot.

Simply put, AMD's flagship Ryzen 9 7950X is a multi-threading monster of a mainstream CPU. It commands a hefty power draw, an even heftier cooler, and (most consequential to you) a steep price, at $699 MSRP (though discounted a bit these days). For...

The competition in the CPU market at the moment is fierce and there aren't many bad options, meaning the Ryzen 9 7900X certainly has its place and ushers in new levels of performance for under £ despite AMD not having upped core counts this time around....

AMD’s Ryzen 9 7900X is a high-performance processor that will appeal to those with mixed productivity workloads in mind. At its current price point, though, the highly-competitive Intel 13900K and 13700K are very tough competitors to deal with.

All in all your use case and budget will be the deciding factors. If you want a good all-rounder that games like a champ, the Ryzen 5 7600X is a star and wins our OC3D Gamers Choice award. However, if you want good gaming and excellent creativity performance then the Ryzen 9 7900X is great and worthy of our OC3D Performance Award, but we would urge you to consider saving a little harder and going for the flagship Ryzen 9 7950X.

When it comes to upgrading to any new CPU we need to talk about platform and platform costs. The big improvements with Ryzen 7000 and the new motherboards is that you will get PCI-Express 5.0 and DDR5 support. This does come at a cost as you will need to buy a new motherboard to run these processors and you’ll have to buy more expensive DDR5 memory.

The AMD Ryzen 9 7900X is a highly potent desktop processor, often outperforming the Intel Core i9-12900K in multi-core benchmarks while being priced lower. If you're looking for a dedicated gaming processor, the Ryzen 9 7900X is overkill; the Ryzen 5...

AMD is launching its Ryzen 9 7900X at just $549, which is already $40 off the $589 that Intel’s 12900K can still be found at retail for. And this is just pricing for the 7900X. AMD didn’t supply the $699 7950X in time for review, but it’s easy to assume the flagship Zen 4 chip should beat Intel’s 12900K even more convincingly with more cores and a higher boost clock.

The 12900K is a great processor, but the 7900X is better, but not at everything and that’s ok. For me, it’s a simple choice if you are looking for value for money without going crazy, but also getting the balance of having the latest technology at the same time and if that sounds like you, then the 7900X is a clear winner in my books and if previous generation Ryzen products are anything to go by, then it’s only going to get better over time.

AMD is pricing the Ryzen 9 7900X at $550, which is also the price at which the 5900X was launched. At this price, it is seen undercutting the $585 that the i9-12900K commands. With application workloads, there can be no doubt that you're getting more muscle than the top Alder Lake, for fewer coins, with the 7900X ending up with 12% more performance per Dollar. The gaming performance of the i9-12900K is 3-5% higher than the 7900X, but at 6.3% more cost.

AMD’s Ryzen 9 7900X is AMD’s second highest specced processor in the Ryzen 7000 line-up. During Computex of this year, AMD announced that we’d be getting a 30% boost on average compared to Intel’s flagship CPU, the Core i9 12900K. Our final verdict is that we’re definitely getting a performance boost, but not as close to the advertised metric. We don’t know how exactly AMD measured this increase, but during our benchmarking experience on average, the Ryzen 9 7900X sits around 15% to 20% higher than the Core i9 12900K in terms of performance.
