AMD Ryzen 7 8700G

The Ryzen 7 8700G is not exactly affordable at $330, and at that price, it's not the best value combination of CPU and GPU hardware. Sure, in a single package, what the 8700G delivers as an all-in-one solution is impressive, but unless you specifically require your desktop CPU and GPU integrated into a single solution, it doesn't make sense.

Performance Benchmarks

All benchmark data reflects aggregated results from dozens of tests conducted in TechSpot’s labs and compiled from our full library of CPU reviews. Single-core productivity scores are based primarily on Cinebench and Adobe Photoshop workloads. Multi-core results draw from Cinebench, Blender, Corona Benchmark, 7-Zip, Adobe Premiere Pro, and shader compilation tests. CPU gaming benchmarks are all 1080p runs (explainer) as published on TechSpot.

Ryzen 7 8700G allows 1080p gaming without a graphics card!

AMD's Ryzen 7 8700G is an excellent single-chip gaming solution, especially for small PCs that can't house a graphics card, but it just can't beat a conventional CPU and GPU combination on price/performance.

The Ryzen 7 8700G is a genuine and very welcome 1080p gaming option for those unable or unwilling to spend money on a discrete card. However, gaming aside, it loses a little too much to its Ryzen 7000-series siblings to make it a truly compelling all rounder.

This processor's unique appeal sets it apart from more powerful options in the same price range. The integrated Radeon 780M graphics are far beyond just a crutch for when your graphics card breaks down; they're a viable option for playing modern titles at around 60 FPS if you can stomach lowering the visual settings. Promises made by AMD's HYPR-PX technology, like Fluid Motion Frames, claim to boost performance with a series of updates following its release, and the boxed Wraith cooler saves you from spending on a brand-new option.

Priced at $329 USD for the 8700G, and $279 USD for the 8600G, AMD has provided some compelling entry level APUs that are both capable, and efficient for casual use. Seeing the impressive performance of the AMD 8000G series compared to publicly available data of other similarly priced CPU’s with integrated graphics, makes the 8000G Series an obvious first choice.

By StorageReview on

Overall, the Ryzen 7 8700G and Ryzen 5 8600G offer solid performance for the price, but the next step in the evolution of the APU may yet still be to come, as AMD is preparing Zen 5 for launch, which, according to their roadmap, is scheduled for this year. It'll be a while after that until we see Zen 5-based APUs (if at all), but we appreciate the concept of the APU and what it offers to users on a budget in an increasingly inflated hardware market.

For now then, the 8700G and 8600G are the new premier options in their niche, delivering commendable graphics performance - and decent CPU grunt as well - for a new generation of AM5 motherboards. Of course, these aren't the only Ryzen processors scheduled to arrive this year: AMD's eagerly anticipated full-fat Zen 5 desktop chips are expected to debut by the midpoint of 2024 under the Ryzen 9000 family name. We can only imagine the power level memes.
