AMD Ryzen 5 8600G

The Ryzen 5 8600G is a more affordable version of AMD's powerful APU family, bringing strong integrated GPU gaming performance to certain use cases, like SFF and passive builds. Memory and AM5 motherboard pricing, not to mention competition from CPU+GPU combos, muddy the waters, but this chip is a much better deal than its more expensive counterpart, the Ryzen 7 8700G.

I’ve always argued that the majority of gamers don’t actually need 7 or 9-level desktop processors, and the AMD Ryzen 5 8600G has taken that argument to a whole new level. For what can now be found under $200, it’s an excellent CPU that’s capable of great things even at the highest resolutions, even in the most demanding games. I’m not sure I’d choose it over Intel’s equivalent due to its lesser specs, but it’s closer to our top spot than I thought it’d be.

AMD's Ryzen 5 8600G isn't the most muscular CPU you can buy, but it drives competitive integrated-graphics performance for its price. It's an ideal chip for budget gaming PCs.

AMD answers the prayers of gamers who want to build a custom gaming desktop PC but don't have the funds to blow on an extravagant dedicated graphics card. The integrated Radeon 760M graphics don't quite match up to the 780M found in its more powerful Ryzen 7 8700G sibling, but the Ryzen 5 8600G still handles AAA titles at low settings and modest framerates. If you're happy to play with FSR 3 upscaling or around a steady 40 FPS, you can happily join your friends in the latest PC exclusives.

If you want solid gaming performance, modern features, and future upgrade paths, the AMD Ryzen 5 8600G is one of the best budget gaming CPUs in 2025. Whether you're building a rig or buying a prebuilt, this chip offers more than expected for the price.

For a mainstream PC the integrated graphics is plenty it's performance for $229, however compelling or truly convincing, it's not. If you want a bit more bite though, the 8700G with its 8-cores would surely get my preference, but at $329 I'd probably steer you to the Ryzen 7000 range on the Ryzen 5 7700 65W part with more cache unless you really wanna go for fast integrated graphics.

And we get to the question: should I buy the 8700G or the 8600G, with the latter having a notably lower price tag at $229, vs. $329 of the high-end 8000G model? It depends on what system you want to build. If you desire a small system housed in an ITX system, the all-in-one solution that the 8000G CPUs offer is highly convenient. On the other hand, if you don’t have space restrictions, you could get a more affordable processor, e.g., the AMD Ryzen 5 7600X or an Intel i5-13400F, and match them with an affordable graphics card, like the Intel Arc A380...
