AMD Ryzen Threadripper 7970X

With mainstream parts such as the Ryzen 9 7950X now offering 16 cores and 32 threads for under $600, there was no chance it wasn't going to head in this direction. That being the case, these new Threadripper 7000 processors have no direct competition. If you are in need of a core-heavy processor or require tons of PCIe lanes, there's no better alternative than this.

Performance Benchmarks

All benchmark data reflects aggregated results from dozens of tests conducted in TechSpot’s labs and compiled from our full library of CPU reviews. Single-core productivity scores are based primarily on Cinebench and Adobe Photoshop workloads. Multi-core results draw from Cinebench, Blender, Corona Benchmark, 7-Zip, Adobe Premiere Pro, and shader compilation tests. CPU gaming benchmarks are all 1080p runs (explainer) as published on TechSpot.

AMD's 32-core Ryzen Threadripper 7970X delivers superior value for professional users who need supercharged multi-threaded performance and the platform's high lane counts.

We’re very happy that AMD has decided to re-enter and re-invigorate the HEDT space. The Threadripper 7000 series is a monstrously powerful platform. If you’ll benefit from a many-core processor with gobs of memory bandwidth and tons of IO, you’ll be well served by the Threadripper 7000 series. AMD’s got an absolute beast on its hands here.

As you greet the morning and find yourself standing beside the Threadripper 7970X/TRX50 PC, uttering 'your majesty' under your breath, it's clear that AMD has accomplished something noteworthy. Engaging with these processors instils a profound respect for their sheer capabilities prompting a mix of amusement and awe. Observing 64-threads in action and witnessing benchmarks complete in the blink of an eye is truly remarkable. It's challenging to find enough superlatives to describe this product.

The AMD Ryzen Threadripper 7000 Series is an impressive entry into the HEDT market, redefining expectations for power and performance. As expected, the new AMD Ryzen Threadripper 7000 Series certainly had an incredible showing during our gauntlet of benchmarks. We specifically looked at the two highest core parts, the 7980X, and 7970X models, comparing with the Threadripper PRO 7995WX for good measure.

Just like it’s companion 7980X, the Ryzen Threadripper 7970X is a whopper of a chip. It delivers incredible multi-threaded performance, at higher clock speeds than the 7980X albeit with half as many cores, eating content creation workloads for breakfast. Courtesy of firmware optimizations, it also sustains higher core clocks in lightly threaded workloads for superior gaming and media capabilities. Lastly, it maintains a very reasonable power limit of 349W at stock that can be overridden for a mild boost using PBO. However, this is best avoided unless you have a top-end water cooling solution.
