Unleashed earlier this year, Nvidia's 3072 CUDA Core GTX Titan X was every enthusiast's dream until it was overshadowed by the GTX 980 Ti a few months later. Although the GTX 980 Ti is slower, it lets power users enjoy 4K gaming for $650 versus $1,000...

With that in mind, we're not totally shocked at AMD's MSRP of $1,500 -- well over the $1,200 it would cost for a pair of R9 290Xs.

AMD has boldly gone where it hasn't gone before for its reference designs, adding water-cooling to its newest offering, the 295X2. Just looking at the elegant design of the setup requires a rethink about the usual complexity of water-cooling. It's a...

More to the point, there is no other graphics card anywhere near to it - and it doesn't look as though it'll have similarly priced competition any time in the next few months. For those lucky few who can afford the best gaming rig, this marvel will be the jewel in a hot but utterly dazzling crown.

I’m happy to applaud its design and performance, but I couldn’t recommend it as a sensible purchase; even if you can afford one or find one for sale.

What I know for certain is that AMD’s Radeon 295X2 is a compelling product, and that it justifies its asking price in performance, thermals, and aesthetics. And I hope it signals a bold new direction for AMD in terms of design language and branding. Quite simply, if you’re not married to Nvidia’s robust ecosystem and want a 4K-capable card that stays cool and quiet, you can’t go wrong with the Radeon R9 295X2.

In return you get to play your games at butter-smooth framerates with merely the very best image quality settings. Pricing discussion aside, we have to give the Radeon R9 295x2 our Top pick award.

Personally I'm not so convinced that 4K is a must anyway, in most games I see very little difference between 2560x1600 w/ AA and 4K w/o AA, so little that I wonder if the performance hit is really worth it.

Based on cooling present on the Asus Ares II, the Radeon R9 295X2 is an obscenely fast card that delivers smooth framerates at ultra-high resolutions. The $1,499 (£1,100-plus) price tag certainly isn't going to win any value awards, but any halo product, especially one that sets new performance standards, is never cheap.
