Nvidia GeForce GTX 950

The GTX 950 replaces the GTX 750 Ti as the new $150 GPU in Nvidia's current generation line up. Whereas the GTX 750 Ti was light on performance, the GTX 950 promises to deliver highly playable 1080p performance and will take on the R7 370. The GTX 950 features the same GM206 GPU as the GTX 960 with a few core features disabled.

We don't expect AMD to sit around and watch the GTX 950 dominate the budget gaming market. If history has taught us anything, we expect AMD to slash the price of its R7 370. The company is also likely to rebadge its R9 270X as the R9 370X and with 1280 SPUs it would presumably outperform the GTX 950.

Nvidia turned up the heat on AMD's Radeon product range late last year when it released its latest GPUs based on the Maxwell microarchitecture. The GTX 980 delivered previously unseen performance from a single GPU and was highly sought after even at...

Nvidia set out to build an affordable 1080p card with the GTX 950, and it's an undoubted success: It's faster than the R7 370 in almost every benchmark without costing any more, and it's even got the grunt to handle some games at 1440p. Many of Nvidia's...

The STRIX-GTX950-DC2OC-2GD5-GAMING (yes that is the full product code name) is a nice entry level product with proper cooling and totally silent noise levels. Combined with the rendering performance I'd call this product a capable 1080P graphics card. All boxes are ticked and that makes this a competitive product.

Asus GTX 950 offers excellent graphics and cooling performance while remaining nearly silent at all times. It delivers incredible performance per dollar, and nearly renders the GTX 960 obsolete. Gaming at 1080p and below is a treat on this card.

Overall, the GeForce GTX 950 seems like a very good card, but it is held back by pricing, just like the GTX 960 it is based on. The GTX 950 is basically a cheaper GTX 960 with proportionately less performance but the same feature set. NVIDIA's MSRP is $160 and Gigabyte is asking another $10 for their OC version, which is a stretch.

As much as we like to see companies push the envelope with GPUs such as the GTX 980 Ti and Fury X, the bread and butter is in the mainstream market that caters for gamers who enjoy their thrills and spills at a 1080p resolution. If that's you then the Asus GeForce GTX 950 Strix Direct CU II OC is a good fit.

Turning to the Gigabyte card, we think it's fine but nothing special. Its dinky profile is appreciated, but we do wish it were a little more discrete in terms of noise. It's still a quiet card, but given the low power consumption here we think that noise could have been kept even lower.

If you or someone you know is using a GTX 650 class graphics card or older and is looking to improve their gaming experience on a 1920x1080 panel, the GeForce GTX 950 is the best option for users that have a price ceiling of $170 or less. You’ll find plenty of overclocked cards with custom and quiet coolers on the market this week, so line up and take your pick.
