AMD Radeon RX 6500 XT

Revisiting the Radeon RX 6500 XT: The 6500 XT was a poor release from AMD, and it was poorly timed. It should have been released for no more than $150 and sold for no more than that price. Today, it can't be priced over $100; anything over that, and you're better off investing in the RX 6600, or perhaps even the Intel Arc A580, though the RX 6600 is the value king at the $200 price point or lower.

I can’t help but feel AMD could have done so much better here, but it looks as though the Radeon brand is destined to flounder. That's a real shame given how competitive they became at the high-end this generation, though even there they’ve failed to capitalize due to supply woes.

The AMD RX 6500 XT has all the makings of a new budget GPU, including underwhelming performance. Unfortunately, the price only qualifies as "budget" in today's world of radically inflated GPU prices, and even then, it will likely sell for far more than its official $199 MSRP.

All we can say in closing is – please don’t buy this graphics card. If you know anyone thinking about buying it, tell them to wait, or get something else. At the expected retail prices once the initial batch of MSRP cards has sold out, consumers would be getting both a cheaper and overall better product by purchasing the six year-old RX 480 than AMD’s newest graphics card, something which can only be described as an utter travesty, and frankly, an insult to gamers.

While the AMD Radeon RX 6500 XT does deliver on what it’s looking to do, namely 1080p gaming at medium-high settings, it fails to improve performance over its last-generation counterpart, which makes this graphics card feel more like a stagnation than an actual new product.

The AMD Radeon RX 6500 XT brings ray tracing and affordable GPUs to the masses, but doing so requires some unorthodox tweaks that can affect performance. If it stays in stock near MSRP and you stick to settings it’s intended for, this is a solid mainstream 1080p graphics card, and a good option for new PC gamers.

In a non-shortage era a card like this would probably have been a slightly higher-end budget offering in the $100-$150 region of the market. I don’t think it would have launched at the same $169 as the RX 5500 XT more than two years ago. Let’s just pretend it’s $149. Does that make you feel better?

I guess the one silver lining is this: the RX 6500 XT is a 6nm card - the first 6nm card - so it's at least not competing against AMD's existing 7nm offerings in terms of production. If that means that some small amount of GPU demand is sated, and the generally better RX 6600, 6600 XT and so on are slightly easier to find, then that's at least a small net positive for the world. Beyond that though, it's hard to find a compelling case for why the RX 6500 XT was worth releasing in the first place.

I’m sure Nvidia will have their own counterattack, but performance be damned as I bet the winner comes down to nothing more than stock and prices. Either way, it’s good to have a somewhat more realistic and attainable card on the market, as flagship cards can be pretty tiresome for your average consumer’s bank balance.
