AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE

The GRE is just too similar to the 7800 XT in terms of performance and would really benefit from faster memory to fully leverage those extra cores. Speaking of which, memory overclocking is almost entirely restricted on the GRE, as AMD only allows the frequency to be increased by a maximum of 3% to 2,316 MHz, resulting in a throughput of 18.5 Gbps.

The Radeon RX 7900 XT is the second RDNA 3 GPU released thus far, and no, you didn't just read this review days ago, this is the XT version, not the XTX. It's not a good naming convention from AMD, with enough numbers available they surely could have...

AMD’s Radeon RX 7900 GRE, first launched in China has finally made its way global. The slightly odd-named GPU sits in between the RX 7800 XT and 7900 XT, providing solid 4K and 1440p gaming performance, for those on a budget. Pound for pound it easily keeps up and even surpasses the RTX 4070 Super, while retaining a $50 cheaper price point across the board. If you’re tired of GeForce Experience, and don’t mind too much r.e. Ray Tracing performance, the 7900 GRE could be a fantastic pick.

The AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE fills in the gap between the 7800 XT and the 7900 XT. Priced just 10% higher than the former, it's also about 10% faster, providing a good overall value – if not quite exceptional. Sapphire's Pulse gets an extra half-star for being well-designed and exceptionally quiet.

Confusing name aside, the Radeon RX 7900 GRE is one of the best Radeon releases (or re-releases) in a long time, bringing some real competition to the table. For $549, it trades blows with the more expensive GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER, and in Sapphire NITRO form, it looks fantastic doing it.

If the $549 pricing holds, then it’s bound to put pressure on Nvidia to respond because the combination of Fluid Motion Frames and the RX 7900 GRE’s 1440p performance is a very tempting combo for anyone looking to upgrade to 1440p.

The Radeon RX 7900 GRE will be available globally tomorrow, at a MSRP of $550. At this price point the card is competitively priced. It's slightly more expensive than the RTX 4070 non-Super ($525), but more affordable than the RTX 4070 Super ($590), yet the GRE achieves better raster-only performance than both these models and is quite close to the RTX 4070 Ti non-Super ($720). At the same time AMD's card offers 16 GB VRAM, while all these NVIDIA cards offer only 12 GB. AMD does fall back in ray tracing performance though, and power consumption/efficiency is a bit worse, so the lower pricing is reasonable. Sapphire's Pulse is priced at $550, yet comes with a small factory OC, and more importantly an excellent cooler with fantastic noise levels.
