In the end, the Radeon R9 270 is another strong product from AMD that stands out at its price point. If you’re in the market for an affordable graphics card that’ll let you play virtually any title with decent frame rates at 1080p, the Radeon R9 270 is worthy of consideration.

In any event, the R9 270 looks like a winner for 1080p gaming. The good performance and Battlefield 4 bundle seal the deal, and the promise of extra performance in Mantle-enabled games is the icing on the cake. Folks with (slightly) deeper pockets may prefer to spend the extra $20 on the R9 270X, but given the small difference in clock rates between the two, I'm not sure I'd even bother.

ASUS wise the DirectCU II model cooler does its job very nicely as well, the card runs steady at just over 60 Degrees C under full load. Overall it offers good performance and has all variables right + leaves some room for overclocking, albeit only a little due to the BIOS clock lock. The noise levels are a complete non-issue thanks to the cooler.

Fully appreciating that the R9 270X and GTX 660 OC can be purchased from £145, pricing for this new GPU will be key. We believe the Sapphire R9 270 Dual-X is a good buy at £130 - any more and it encroaches on territory occupied by innately better cards.

The R9 270 is an excellent little graphics card that provides an enviable combination of low price with good framerates along with a free copy of Battlefield 4. In a head to head battle against the GTX 660, it is a clear winner but with a mere $20 of separation between it and the R9 270X, most gamers would be better off buying its more capable sibling and ignoring the R9 270 altogether.

The impressions we're left with after our time with the R9 270 are rather mixed. On the one hand, the card is clearly a competent performer in modern games at 1080p and is available at an attractive price point, which is what it was designed to be....

AMD’s latest $179 card outpaces Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 660, while closing in on the much pricier GTX 760 and remaining quiet under load. It’s a good choice for budget-conscious 1080p gaming, though Nvidia’s gaming bundle may be more appealing than...
